How does TikTok Shop affiliate work for creators?
Last updated · by Buse Dülger
TikTok Shop affiliate lets creators earn commission by tagging other brands' products in videos, LIVEs and their showcase. In the US you apply in TikTok Studio once you are 18+ with 1,000 followers. Sellers set the commission rate and TikTok tracks each order. You are usually paid on the 15th day after delivery, minus refunds.
What is TikTok Shop affiliate for creators?
TikTok Shop affiliate is TikTok's in-app commission programme. You add a seller's product link to a video, a LIVE or the showcase on your profile, and you earn a percentage of every eligible order that comes through it. You hold no stock, handle no shipping and never touch the customer's payment. TikTok tracks the order and pays you your share.
Affiliate marketing for TikTok Shop is the same model, seen from the brand's side. TikTok Shop's US Academy separates two things. In affiliate promotion, a merchant pays a creator commission on each item sold through their content. In self-selling, a merchant sells its own products from its own account and pays no commission. TikTok also splits shop creators into three types, and when most creators say 'TikTok affiliate' they mean only the first one.
Affiliate creator
This is the standard route for independent creators. You apply yourself, need at least 1,000 followers in the US, and get access to the Product Marketplace, where you can promote products from any participating seller. You don't need a contract with a single brand: you pick products, add them to your showcase and earn whatever commission each seller has set.
Marketing creator
This is an account linked to one seller through a marketing bind, often a brand ambassador or staff account under a different name. It can sell the linked shop's products with no follower minimum. In the US, though, it needs 5,000 followers before it can promote other sellers' products from the marketplace.
Official shop creator
This is the brand's own account. It shares the shop's name and is linked to it. It can only promote that shop's products, has no follower minimum and can't use the marketplace. If you are a founder selling your own range, this is your route, and the seller guide covers it in full.
How do you sell on TikTok Shop and work with creators as a seller
How do you become a TikTok Shop affiliate?
You apply inside the app once you meet the age, follower and location rules for your market, then pass age and identity checks. In the US, open TikTok Studio, go to Monetization, choose TikTok Shop for Creator and tap Join now. According to TikTok Shop's US Creator Eligibility Policy, you must be at least 18, based in the US and have at least 1,000 followers. You must also follow the Shop content policy and community guidelines, and you can't have had e-commerce permissions taken away before.
You may be asked to verify your identity after your first commission, and you can't withdraw earnings until that check clears. One ID can verify up to five creator accounts. Don't buy followers to reach the threshold: account-health checks can block your application or remove your access later.
UK creators
In the UK, the published requirements are more than 1,000 followers, age 18 or over, and a video posted in the last 28 days with none removed in that time. That help page is several years old, so treat it as a starting point and check the current threshold in your app before you plan around it.
The 30-day pilot
US affiliates with fewer than 5,000 followers start in a pilot that lasts at least 30 days. During it you can post up to 3 shoppable videos a day and 3 shoppable LIVEs a week. You can only promote products from shops with a performance score of 95% or higher, and you can't join campaigns. To leave the pilot you need 5,000 followers and 30 days in the programme.
Unlocking limits early
If you are still under 5,000 followers, TikTok may lift some limits early. You need to pass the probation quiz and hold at least 176 Creator Health Rating points. You also need one of the following: 6 shoppable videos of at least 8 seconds, a shoppable LIVE of at least 5 minutes, or 10 orders from your content.
Posting caps for everyone
All US creators and merchants can post at most 30 shoppable short videos and 60 shoppable photo posts a day. During the pilot, shoppable videos you later delete or make private still count against your quota, and so do videos you schedule. Plan your week before you post rather than testing and deleting.
How do TikTok Shop affiliate commissions work?
The seller sets the commission rate on each product, and you earn that percentage of whatever the buyer doesn't send back. TikTok Shop's commission guide gives the formula as revenue minus refunds, multiplied by the commission rate. A fully refunded order earns you nothing, and a partial refund reduces your share. The estimate you see straight after a sale is not your final commission.
Your rate is protected once you start promoting a product. If a seller raises the rate, you get the higher rate straight away. If they lower it, you keep your original rate for 30 days and get a warning 2 days before the lower rate applies. If you remove the product from your showcase or delete the content, you lose the locked rate. Shoppable carousels pay 60% of the video rate by default.
Rates vary a lot by category and type of deal. Beauty and supplements usually sit at the higher end and electronics at the lower end. Invite-only offers are where sellers pay above their public rate. Open offers are typically 5-20% (industry range), but always check the rate on the product card rather than relying on a blog average.
Open collaboration
This is a public offer that any eligible creator can pick up from the Product Marketplace at the seller's listed rate. It is the quickest way to test products: add them to your showcase, post and see what sells. Some open offers include free samples, or tiered rates that go up once you pass a set number of orders.
Target collaboration
This is an invitation from a seller to you personally, often with a higher rate, free samples or a flat fee. Read the terms before you accept. If a seller changes the rate on a target offer, the change applies after 5 days, not the 30-day protection you get on open offers.
Shop Ads commission
Some sellers set a separate rate for orders that come from your content when they run it as a Shop Ad. Cuts to this rate get the same 30-day protection, but without the 2-day warning. Check both rates on the product before you commit a series of videos to it.
Which TikTok affiliate programmes are worth joining?
The best programme is one whose products your audience already buys, at a commission that is still worth it after returns. Inside TikTok Shop, that means choosing between open offers, targeted invites and campaigns. Outside it, TikTok affiliate marketing can also mean sending viewers to another retailer's affiliate link from your bio.
Judge every offer on four things: how well the product fits your niche, the seller's shop performance and return rate, whether samples are offered, and what the commission is really worth after refunds. Beauty, skincare, supplements and fashion suit demo-led content. Low-margin gadgets need high sales volume to pay off. If you want paid briefs as well as commission, #Collabz is a fit for creators working with beauty, skincare, supplement, fashion and lifestyle DTC brands in the UK and US.
Whichever route you choose, label your content. The FTC's Disclosures 101 guidance warns influencers not to assume a platform's built-in disclosure tool is good enough on its own, so add a clear label yourself.
TikTok Shop open offers
These are the default starting point: browse the Product Marketplace, filter by category or free sample, and add products to your showcase. There's nothing to negotiate, so you can test five products in a week and keep the two that convert. This route suits newer creators who are still in the pilot programme.
Targeted invites and campaigns
Sellers invite chosen creators with better rates, samples or flat fees, and TikTok runs campaigns around sales events. Creators still in the pilot can't join campaigns, which is a practical reason to reach 5,000 followers and graduate as quickly as you honestly can.
Brand ambassador programmes
Many DTC brands run their own always-on programmes outside TikTok Shop, usually a personal discount code plus commission on each sale. They suit creators who post on several platforms, because the code works wherever your audience sees it, not just inside TikTok's checkout.
Off-platform affiliate links
Retailer affiliate networks pay on sales that start when viewers tap your bio link and leave TikTok. Buyers have an extra step compared with in-app checkout, but you can promote products that aren't on TikTok Shop and reach markets where Shop isn't available.

What is TikTok Shop Creator Center used for?
Creator Center is where you run your affiliate work inside TikTok. From there you browse the Product Marketplace, manage your showcase, request samples, accept collab invites, check your pilot status and track earnings. Open it from the creator tools on your profile under TikTok Shop for Creator. Your commissions are under Earnings.
It covers three jobs. Discovery means finding products and offers worth your audience's time. Publishing means attaching those products to your content. Admin covers samples, payouts and account health. Your Creator Health Rating page shows any violations that could limit your posting or your commission, so check it whenever your reach or quotas change.
Showcase
Your showcase is the shop tab on your profile, listing every product you have added. Viewers can browse it without watching a particular video. It is also where your locked commission rate lives: if you remove a product, the lock is lost, and adding it back gets you whatever rate the seller offers at that point.
Shoppable videos
On the post details screen, tap Add link, choose Product, then add the items you want to tag before you publish. If you add a product link to a video you posted earlier, it becomes a shoppable video and counts towards your posting limits, so pick older videos carefully.
Shoppable LIVE
On the pre-LIVE screen, tap the shopping bag, then Add products, and choose what you will sell. Pin the product you are showing so viewers can buy with one tap. If you are going LIVE to meet a free-sample commitment, the sample product must be pinned for the LIVE to count.
How do free samples work on TikTok Shop?
Free samples are products a seller sends you at no cost for you to feature in your content, and you keep them. According to TikTok Shop's US samples guide, they are open to creators who have made sales in the last 120 days, and the seller has to approve each request. You must post within 14 days of the sample arriving, either in a public video that stays up for at least 3 days or in a LIVE of at least 10 minutes, with the product link attached.
If you miss deadlines, your free sample limit drops. That limit is set by your creator level and how reliably you post. New creators with no sales yet can use refundable samples instead: you buy the product, and if your content reaches the seller's sales goal within 120 days, you get the full price back, including shipping and tax. The goal is usually 1 to 3 orders.
A free product is still a commercial relationship. Content made with a gifted sample is an ad, so label it '#ad' in the US and 'Ad' in the UK, even if no fee was paid.
How much can you earn as a TikTok Shop affiliate?
Your earnings depend on how many viewers buy, the order value and the seller's rate, minus refunds. That means they can range from nothing to a real income depending on your niche, product prices and how often you post. There is no fixed pay per video and no minimum guarantee. Approval gives you the tools, not an income.
Here is an illustration, not a benchmark. A £30 serum at a 15% rate earns £4.50 per order the buyer keeps. A hundred kept orders in a month is £450 before tax. If ten of those hundred are returned, you lose the commission on those ten. Higher-priced products and higher rates change the maths faster than extra views do.
Two levers matter most: more shoppable posts on products you know sell, and LIVEs, where you can answer questions and pin products as you go. Use Creator Center to see which products convert. Drop the ones that don't once you've given them a fair test.
What makes a TikTok Shop affiliate video convert?
Videos that convert show the product working in the first seconds, then answer the buyer's next question before they scroll away. A reliable structure is hook, proof, objection, offer. Name the problem, show the fix on camera, deal with the doubt (price, size, will it work on my skin) and point to the tagged product and any live deal.
For tech gadgets and accessories, open on the result rather than the unboxing: a charger topping up a phone on the commute, a cable organiser clearing a desk, a ring light fixing a dim call. Follow with one spec viewers care about and a side-by-side with what they use now. Trending hooks date quickly, so build them from your own comments and current searches rather than copying last season's lines.
The ASA's influencers' guide includes advice on affiliate marketing and on making clear that ads are ads. Say 'Ad' up front in the UK and use '#ad' in the US. Don't rely on the shopping icon to do that job for you.
Problem-first (beauty)
Open on the problem, for example: 'My foundation was separating by lunch.' Show a fresh application, then the same face hours later, then a close-up of the texture. Finish with who it suits, the shade range and the tagged product. Only claim what viewers saw on camera, and don't promise skin or medical results.
Side-by-side (supplements)
Put the product next to what you used before and compare things viewers can check for themselves: serving size, taste, how it mixes and price per serving. Don't make health or weight-loss claims the brand can't back up. Supplement advertising is tightly regulated in both the UK and the US.
Demo-in-use (tech gadgets)
Start mid-action, with the gadget solving a problem within three seconds. Then show one spec, one real-world test and one honest limitation. Mentioning the limitation builds trust and cuts returns, which protects commission you would otherwise lose to refunds.
How are TikTok Shop affiliates paid and taxed?
Commission is paid into a commission account, which you set up after your first sale and which asks for personal and tax details. Under TikTok Shop's affiliate order rules, commission usually arrives on the 15th day after delivery. It can take up to 31 days if the seller's settlement period is longer, or until any return, refund or dispute is resolved. Cancelled or fully refunded orders pay nothing.
If all your commission comes from local products, you can withdraw your earnings whenever you like. Once you earn from cross-border products as well, all your future commission is withdrawn automatically every Wednesday.
Commission is taxable income. In the UK it usually counts as self-employed trading income, which may mean registering for Self Assessment with HMRC. In the US, it is generally self-employment income that you report to the IRS. Keep records of your commission, the samples you keep and any costs. Ask an accountant how thresholds and kept samples apply to you.

Frequently asked questions
What are the official TikTok Shop affiliate requirements?
In the US, TikTok's Creator Eligibility Policy requires you to be at least 18, based in the US and to have at least 1,000 followers. You also need to pass identity verification and keep a clean policy record. UK creators need more than 1,000 followers, must be 18 or over and must have posted a video in the last 28 days. Check the current rules in the app before you apply.
Is a TikTok seller the same as a TikTok affiliate?
No. A seller lists and ships its own products through Seller Center and pays commission to creators who promote them. An affiliate is a creator who promotes other sellers' products and earns that commission, without holding stock.
What is a TikTok Shop affiliate link?
It is the tracked product link you attach to a shoppable video, a LIVE or a shareable post, so that orders are credited to you. Commission is paid on orders placed through those links, minus any refunds. If you remove the product or delete the content, you lose your locked commission rate.
How do you start TikTok Shop affiliate with a small account?
Once you reach 1,000 followers in the US, apply through TikTok Studio under Monetization and TikTok Shop for Creator. Below 5,000 followers you start in a pilot of at least 30 days, with posting limits and access only to high-scoring shops. Use refundable samples until you have sales, because free samples need recent sales.
How do you make money on TikTok Shop without your own products?
Join as an affiliate creator, add marketplace products to your showcase and tag them in videos and LIVEs, earning the commission each seller sets. As you build a sales record, look for target invites with higher rates, flat fees or samples. Running a shop of your own is a separate seller route.
Is TikTok Shop for Creator the same as the Creator Rewards Program?
No. TikTok Shop for Creator pays commission on products sold through your content. The Creator Rewards Program pays for qualifying views of your videos and has its own separate eligibility rules.
Do TikTok Shop affiliate videos need an ad label?
Yes. Commission and free samples are both commercial relationships, so label the content '#ad' in the US or 'Ad' in the UK, clearly and up front. Don't rely on the shopping icon or a platform tool alone to do it for you.
