How do you sell on TikTok Shop and work with creators as a seller?

Last updated · by Ela Diker

To sell on TikTok Shop, register a seller account in Seller Centre, verify your business, list products and set up shipping. Then turn on the affiliate programme so creators can earn commission for promoting your products. People find products through creator videos and LIVEs, so plan samples, commissions and ad budget before you launch.

What is TikTok Shop for sellers?

TikTok Shop is TikTok's in-app marketplace. Sellers list products in Seller Centre, and shoppers buy without leaving the app, from short videos, LIVEs, the Shop tab and creator showcases. The seller is the business that owns the listing, ships the order and pays the platform commission. Creators promote those listings and earn affiliate commission on the sales they drive.

For DTC brands, the appeal is that buyers are concentrated in one place. In Influencer Marketing Hub's 2026 benchmark report, TikTok Shop took 66% of platform selections among marketers already using social commerce. Instagram Checkout came next with 13%. So the real question is less whether to be on TikTok Shop and more whether your margins can cover commission, samples and ads.

Seller account

A registered business or sole trader opens this in Seller Centre. You own the product listings, set prices and promotions, ship orders, handle returns and receive payouts after the platform commission comes off. You also run the affiliate programme: you choose which products creators can promote, at what commission, and whether they get free samples.

Creator (affiliate) account

A TikTok account that adds other sellers' products to its showcase and earns commission on sales from its videos and LIVEs. Creators hold no stock and don't ship anything. For a brand, they are a sales channel you pay only on results, and a source of content you can later boost with ads.

Brand that is both

Many brands run a seller account and also post from their own official TikTok account. Sales from your own videos and LIVEs carry no affiliate commission, while affiliates extend your reach. Use the brand account to test products and hooks, and the affiliate network to scale what works.

How do you open and set up a TikTok Shop?

To open a TikTok Shop, register in the Seller Centre for your country, choose a seller type and verify your identity and business details. Then complete the shop profile. Only after that can you list products.

TikTok Shop's UK registration guide lists five seller types: sole trader or individual, privately owned business, publicly listed business, state-owned business and charity. Sole traders need a passport or driving licence issued by the UK government, plus a selfie with the ID. Companies also give their registration number, full legal name, registration date and the details of an authorised representative. You can't easily change the seller type later, so choose the one that matches your legal structure. Individual sellers must also meet the minimum age in the seller terms, so check it before you apply.

Each market has its own Seller Centre and rules, so register in the country you will sell into.

Before you apply

Have your company number, legal name, registration date and representative ID ready. Sign up with a TikTok account that matches your brand, or with an email and phone number you haven't used before: each contact detail can register only one shop. Details that don't match your documents exactly are a common cause of verification delays.

Shop profile

Choose a shop name that reflects your brand. TikTok's UK guidance says not to use words like 'official' or 'flagship', or special characters. Add a logo and contact email and phone number, which customers may see. Make these details match the brand name creators will see when they are deciding whether to promote you.

After approval

Once you're approved, Seller Centre shows a starter page that guides you through finishing setup. Work through it in order: shipping, return address, first listings, then affiliate settings. Corporate sellers may also be asked about beneficial ownership, including directors and anyone who holds 25% or more of the shares or control.

How do you sell on TikTok Shop once you are approved?

You sell on TikTok Shop by pairing well-built listings with a steady supply of shoppable content. That means your own videos and LIVEs, affiliate creators' videos, and ads that push the best performers.

Products that are visual, easy to demonstrate and priced for impulse buying suit the format: a serum texture shot, a supplement routine, a try-on haul. Start with three to five hero products rather than the full catalogue, so creator attention and ad spend aren't spread too thin.

Listings

Write titles that match what buyers would search for. Lead with a clean product image, then add lifestyle and texture shots and a short demo video. Only make claims your product can back up, especially in skincare and supplements, because creators will repeat what your listing says to their audiences.

Fulfilment

Decide whether to ship orders yourself or use TikTok's fulfilment service where your market offers it. Shipping yourself keeps control of packaging and inserts. Platform fulfilment can be simpler at volume. Either way, how fast you dispatch matters to buyers and to how the platform rates your shop.

Content cadence

Post from the brand account several times a week. Try LIVE once you have a host who can demonstrate the product well. Tag the product in every video so viewers can tap through to buy. Use your best-performing videos as briefs for creators and as candidates for ads.

What does it cost to sell on TikTok Shop?

You pay TikTok a commission on every completed order. On top of that come the costs you choose: creator commission, samples, fulfilment and ads.

TikTok's own Seller Centre fee pages set the base rate by market. In the US, the referral fee table lists 6% for most categories and 5% for selected jewellery and pre-owned categories. It is calculated on what the customer paid, including shipping, plus any platform discount, minus tax. In the UK, the commission is 9% including VAT. Lower rates can apply to eligible new sellers, to Electronics, to a select number of Beauty and Personal Care categories, and to sellers who complete Seller Missions.

Some seller guides report a higher US rate from August 2026. TikTok's public table, updated in October 2026, still shows 6%, so check your own Seller Centre statement before you set prices.

Platform commission

This is the fixed cut TikTok takes from each completed order before your payout. Rates differ by market and category, and you can't negotiate them. Base your model on the full order value, including shipping the customer pays, not just the product price. Re-check the rate whenever TikTok updates its fee pages.

Affiliate commission

You set this per product, and you pay it only on sales a creator drives. It is typically 10-20% (industry range) on open offers, and higher for hand-picked creators. It comes on top of platform commission: a UK beauty product at 9% plus 15% affiliate commission gives away about a quarter of revenue before any other costs.

Samples, fulfilment and ads

Free samples cost you the product plus postage, and a post isn't guaranteed. Fulfilment is either your own shipping or a per-unit platform fee. Ads run on a budget you set. Build all three into a margin model for each product before launch. Low-margin products rarely survive the full set of costs.

Social commerce, by the numbers

  • 66.2% of platform selections among social commerce adopters went to TikTok Shop, about five times Instagram Checkout.
  • 13.2% of platform selections went to Instagram Checkout, the next most chosen social commerce platform after TikTok Shop.
  • 70.4% of brands increasing influencer budgets already use social commerce, against 41.7% of brands cutting budgets.
  • 45.9% of marketers measure influencer results with promo or discount codes. 25% use native shop features.

How do TikTok Shop codes and discounts work for sellers?

TikTok Shop codes are discounts shoppers apply at checkout. As a seller, you create them with Seller Centre's promotion tools, which include product discounts, vouchers and creator flash sales tied to a LIVE.

Discounts that TikTok funds also appear during its own sale campaigns. In the US, those platform discounts are added back into the fee base, so they don't reduce the commission you pay.

Creators who share a code they earn from, or who got the product free, have a material connection to your brand. The FTC's Disclosures 101 guidance lists payment and free or discounted products as examples, so in the US the post still needs '#ad'.

Seller-funded discounts

Percentage or fixed-amount discounts on selected products for a set period. Use them to give creators a launch hook, such as 'this week only', rather than running them all the time. Permanent discounts teach buyers to wait for the next deal and squeeze margin you need for affiliate commission.

Creator flash sales

Inside a target collaboration, you can attach a flash sale to one creator who has LIVE access. It can run from 10 minutes to 10 days, within the invitation's validity period. It suits a launch LIVE with a host who already sells well for you, and creates urgency that ordinary codes don't.

Platform campaigns

TikTok runs seasonal sale events that sellers can join, often with discounts it helps fund. Join selectively. First check that the discounted price still covers platform commission, affiliate commission and fulfilment. Then have creator content ready before the event starts, not during it.

How does the TikTok Shop affiliate programme work for sellers?

The affiliate programme lets creators promote your products in videos, LIVEs and their showcase. You pay them commission only on the sales they drive.

TikTok's US Academy guide to affiliate collaborations describes two routes, open and target. Commission is set per product, anywhere from 1% to 80%. You can run both routes on the same product, but a creator is paid only one rate, and the target rate always overrides the open rate, so set target rates higher. Commission changes take 5 days to apply on target collaborations and 30 days on open ones, so plan rate tests ahead.

Open collaboration

This makes selected products, or your whole catalogue, visible to every TikTok Shop creator. Turn on approval mode if you want to vet who joins. It works best early on, for volume and discovery: you learn which creators pick up your products and which of them actually sell.

Target collaboration

A direct invitation to named creators for specific products. It includes a pitch message, the deliverables you want (short video or LIVE), an expiry date and optional automatic sample approval. You can send invitations in batches of 50 from your Manage Creators list. Use it for creators who have already sold well for you and for launches.

Samples

Turn on free samples for each collaboration, and set rules in Sample Settings for who qualifies. You can also approve requests automatically from creators you invited. Samples are the main cost of affiliate seeding, so cap quantities, prioritise creators whose followers look like your buyers, and follow up on posting dates.

What do GMV and GMV Max mean for TikTok Shop sellers?

GMV (gross merchandise value) is the total value of orders through your shop, before fees, refunds and costs. GMV Max is TikTok's automated campaign type for Shop ads, designed to grow that number.

With GMV Max, you choose products, a budget and a target return. The system then decides audiences, placements and which videos to push. TikTok has moved Shop advertising onto this format, so you have less manual targeting and the creative you supply matters more.

GMV is not profit. A shop can grow GMV while losing money on commission and discounts, so track it alongside your margin per product.

To test creative, give GMV Max a steady stream of new videos for each hero product, and compare them on orders and return over a fixed period. Put more budget behind the winners, as Spark Ads or fresh edits. When a video wins, brief more creators on the same hook rather than raising the budget on an ageing video.

How should you work with creators to sell on TikTok Shop?

Use a mix of creator arrangements on TikTok Shop: an open offer for volume, target invitations for creators who already sell well, and a small paid group of UGC creators who make videos for your own account and ads.

Whatever the deal, the content is advertising. The ASA and CMA's influencers' guide covers gifted and affiliate content, which in the UK means a clear 'Ad' label. In the US, use '#ad'. Brief the label into every collaboration, including creators who only received free samples.

If you need videos for your brand account and ads alongside your affiliates, #Collabz is one option: it provides vetted UGC creators, with briefs, usage rights and payments handled in one place.

Beauty and skincare

Texture shots, before-and-after routines and honest wear tests sell. Bold claims don't. Brief creators on what they can and can't say, send full-size products rather than minis, and ask for the product to appear in the opening seconds so the shoppable tag gets taps.

Supplements

Routine and habit content works better than promises about results, and it keeps you within advertising rules on health claims. Give creators an approved list of claims and enough samples for real daily use, so the content reflects actual experience rather than a single unboxing.

Fashion and lifestyle

Try-ons, fit notes and styling on different body types sell well because they answer the questions behind most returns. Offer a size swap on samples, and choose creators whose audience matches your size range and price point, not just their follower count.

Frequently asked questions

What are the advantages of being a domestic seller on TikTok Shop?

A domestic seller registers a local business and ships from stock in the same country as the buyer. Delivery is faster, returns are simpler, and you work under one local fee schedule and seller policy. It also makes you easier for local creators to trust and promote.

Should you hire a TikTok Shop specialist or agency?

A specialist or agency makes sense when you have proven products but no time to run affiliate outreach, samples and GMV Max yourself. Before you sign, agree in the contract who owns the creator relationships, how fees are tied to results, and who controls the ad account and Seller Centre access. Ask for case studies in your own category, not just total GMV figures.

Can you sell digital products on TikTok Shop?

TikTok Shop is designed for physical products shipped to a buyer, and digital goods are generally not allowed. Check the prohibited and restricted products policy in Seller Centre for your market before you list anything that doesn't ship.

What is TikTok Shop Seller Centre?

Seller Centre is the dashboard where you register, list products, manage orders and returns, run promotions, set up affiliate collaborations and read your finance statements. Each market has its own Seller Centre and its own help library, the TikTok Shop Academy.

How do you get TikTok Shop seller support?

Start with the TikTok Shop Academy for your market, which has step-by-step guides on registration, fees, affiliate and ads. For account-specific issues, contact support from inside Seller Centre so your shop details are attached to the request.

How should a beginner start selling on TikTok Shop?

Launch with three to five hero products, post from your brand account several times a week, and open an open collaboration with free samples switched on. After a few weeks, move the creators who actually sell to target collaborations at a higher rate. Add GMV Max ads only once you have videos that already convert.

Where do you see your TikTok Shop sales?

Sales, orders and payouts appear in Seller Centre's analytics and finance sections, and affiliate-driven sales are broken down by creator in the Affiliate Centre. Compare GMV with what you actually receive after commission, refunds and affiliate payments to see your real margin.
